It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that CSMFO Founding Father Ray Wood passed away on June 27, 2012. A retired Commander in the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII and Korea and as a Reserve for more than 30 years, Ray was buried with military honors at the National Veterans Cemetery in Kent, Washington. He was 86 years old.

In 1953, discussions began with a group of professional finance officers in Southern California. They recognized the need for a professional society. In February 1957, 25 finance officers adopted the Bylaws and the formal name, California Society of Municipal Finance Officers. Articles of Incorporation were drawn and submitted to the Secretary of State. On May 21, 1957 CSMFO was granted a charter as a non-profit corporation in the State of California. The driver of this endeavor, Ray Wood, became the first CSMFO President in 1958.

From the first 25 members, CSMFO has grown to include nearly 1,600 finance professionals across California; we have an annual conference that draws nearly half that many attendees; and a thriving listserv and network of professionals sharing their thoughts and ideas for improvement. None of this would exist without Ray Wood’s vision and determination.

Thank you Ray. You will be missed.
